Student Reflections

Student reflections on life in an international school (ISR):

We are all the same because we are all different in this school.

In an international school you learn more languages and different people from different countries come together.

In an international school you are safer than in a normal school

In an international school people come from different countries and respect each other.

If you go to an international school you learn different languages. After, you can communicate with people from around the world.

In an international school we are more of a community.

Since I have been in an international school my English has become better.

In an international school you meet different people from all over the world.

International schools are special because they have students from different countries and different cultures, you talk in different languages, you respect people from different countries.

International schools are special because everyone comes from different countries and have different religions and cultures. We all learn and speak English.

International schools are special because anyone can come – kids come from all over the world. Everyone speaks a different language but we speak to each other in English or German.

The great thing about the school is that when new kids come we communicate with them, often in their own language.

It is good to be in an international school because everyone is different and you can learn from them. You can also learn about other religions and get to know other foods.

Since I am here at an international school, I have learned to speak an international language, English, and I know more people from different countries, so I could change my mind about how I think about several ethnic groups.

In an international school you learn things from people around the world, you meet different people and learn another language.

In an international school nobody will tease you for being different.

An international school has people from all around the world with different cultures. You can also understand other people’s cultures.

Being in an international school gives you the chance to meet people from other countries with different cultures. It helps you to know more about people and respect different cultures.

Our school is for everyone from any country. It is private and we speak English in Switzerland where they speak German. We go on field trips and we have international dinners and days. We have nice teachers – the teachers are also international.

What is special about an international school is: that many cultures come together and that you learn to interact better with people who have different thoughts and beliefs.

Going to an international school means being able to communicate with people from different cultures and religions because you have been internationally educated.

Being in an international school exposes us to cultures that we are not familiar with – this gives us a global view of a local occurrence.

Going to an international school in a very traditional country has opened my eyes to the advantages and disadvantages of seeing the world as a global citizen because the world changes as we view it.

Since I am at an International School, I have learned to speak English and experience other cultures.

People come from all over the world. We learn in English and German. Sometimes we hear Danish, French, Spanish, Hindi, Dutch. We can have one language and that is English.

I am more open to other cultures, especially language and food. Also, I find it strange being local in this country, after experiencing the opposite for many years, being foreign in a public school.

I am more open to other cultures, especially language and food. Also I find it strange being ‘local’ (Swiss) in this country, among people from many other countries after experiencing the opposite (foreign in a public school) for many years before.

The school language has changed from German to English. I got friends that only can speak English.

I am open minded to new ideas and different beliefs and cultures.

In an international school there are many different cultures. You learn how to communicate.

Being in an international school has changed my life because I learned other languages and I learned about other cultures and different religions. I am more open-minded and have good self-esteem.

<h2>Student reflections</h2>
In their study of N.H. Kleinbaum’s novel Dead Poet’s Society, Grade 9 students were asked to compare the novel’s Welton Academy to International School Rheintal. The basis for their discussion was Welton’s “four pillars” (tradition, excellence, honor, and discipline). Student reflections are below:

<em>Being an international school, ISR does not necessarily celebrate one country more or less than all the others, the international dinner had dishes from all over the world, the flags that are around school are not just the Swiss flag but flags of many countries.</em>

<em>Excellence is the result of hard work and the key to the success of students and teachers alike. This is very important to ISR. The encouragement to work harder to get better results is enough for most people but even so the teachers provide the students with support and guidance for assignments and the criteria sheets are important for achieving better results because they tell you exactly what you need to do. The teachers themselves want to help the students achieve better results. At ISR, the teachers help and encourage the students so the students get better results.</em>

<em>Honor is dignity and the fulfillment of duty. ISR gives students the right to learn and achieve but the responsibility to fulfill their “duty”. The two are much related, for example, if someone does not do their homework, which is their responsibility, they cannot learn as well. Dignity is important for the reputation of the school, that what we do is good for the image of the school and that we are worthy of the school and the teachers.</em>

<em>Discipline is respect for parents, teachers, the principal and the students. This is the most important pillar at ISR but also the one that is acted upon the most. The respect for each other at ISR is mutual and almost never fails. The Code of Conduct provides a structure for this respect and if there is ever need to enforce it then it will be enforced.</em>

<em>At ISR we have many different nationalities from all over the world. To bring all nationalities together, we arrange “International days” for students, teachers and family.</em>

<em>Honor is the base of a good school. All students and teachers have to be respectful and honest, so that the school can function. Everyone works hard to give the best for school or their job, so it’s important to respect everyone and be honest. ISR is a good example for honor, the relationship between teachers and students are very good, and for this “relationship”, honor is very important.</em>

<em>Students respect their teachers, and teachers their students. Everyone is welcomed to International School Rheintal and all people at ISR, respect each other and each other’s opinion.</em>

<em>Every student gives the best to reach the goal of everyone, to make the diploma, and have a good life. Therefore teachers, friends and family should show respect, to motivate the student to learn now, that they have success in their future.</em>

<em>Everyone in the community of International School Rheintal is honest with each other no matter if teacher or student. The “Code of Conduct” brought the whole school closer together. With the assemblies we share the newest things and present our work. Honor makes our school even nicer. We show respect to everyone and accept everyone from each culture with its own qualities and values.</em>

<em>Excellence is the result of hard work, is the success, in school and anywhere else. International School Rheintal has encouraged the students with plenty of help, support and understanding. It shows respect to everyone and accepts how you are and encourages you to succeed in every single piece of work you do. The teachers and family members show students good understanding and after each effort we make we reached a goal. With these goals that we set ourselves long and short term goals which helps us to get into the Diploma level and maybe helps us in reaching the IB Diploma.</em>

<em>Discipline is respect for parents, teachers, students or principals. International School Rheintal has very much discipline in the school. Every new student or teacher is welcome in the school community and is welcome in the school and gets interacted very quickly in the community of teachers and students. Every new student or teacher feels very welcome in the school. The school principal, teachers and students respect the opinions of others no matter in which way. If you have a problem you can speak with the teachers and they try to help you. The school tries very much to hold together like a big family.</em>

<em>Honor is dignity and the fulfillment of duty. Honor is quite important in ISR because students, teachers and everybody who is included in school, have to show respect and honesty to hold the school together. ISR shows this with “The Code of Conduct” which makes the school work and hold together. The teachers and family encourage students to fulfill the work in the way ISR expects them to. Honor is an important pillar in school, because without it, the school wouldn’t be as nice as it is now. This means that ISR creates the needed dignity and fulfillment of work to make the school have honor.</em>

<em>Excellence is the result of hard work, is the key to all success, in school and everywhere else. ISR has excellence because the teachers encourage the students which helps them to fulfill the work with success. Therefore the students have respect for the teachers because they listen to them and work as well as they can. The teachers also need to show respect to get the results they want to see. When the students fulfill the work with success the teachers and family should show the respect the students want to see to make them work harder. ISR is a good example for excellence because the school shows the needed respect to create this pillar.</em>

<em>Discipline is respect for parents, teachers, students and principals. International School Rheintal has discipline. The students have respect for the teachers, principals, families and the new students who come to school. This means that the students listen to everybody and respect their opinion. Teachers, families and the principal also respect the opinion of the students and try to make the students feel welcome in school.</em>
